Explore Columbus After Dark on a Haunted Fitness Hike

Our ghost tours are not your typical standing-around storytelling sessions. These are active haunted hikes through some of the most historic and eerie areas of Columbus, including parts of Clintonville and the legend of the Walhalla Witch, Olde Town East, and parts of Westerville. You’ll cover real ground, get your steps in, and experience these locations the way they’re meant to be explored, on foot, at night.

This is more about the experience rather than theatrics. I’m not here to perform or dramatize, I’m your guide. Along the way, you’ll get bits of history, local legends, and context behind the locations we visit, but the focus is on the walk, the atmosphere, and the environment itself. It’s a mix of fitness, exploration, and just enough storytelling to make you see these places differently.

If you’re looking for something immersive, slightly eerie, and actually engaging, this is it. Whether you’re here for the haunted history, the late-night hike, or just something different to do in Columbus, these tours give you a unique way to experience the city beyond the usual spots.

Notice: For now, we are only taking bookings through Meetup or Eventbrite when available.

What to Expect on Our Ghost Tours?

This is not a theatrical ghost tour, and I’m not here to perform or entertain. If you want a performance-based story telling experience, then I would recommend a different ghost tour company. I’m not an expert storyteller; I’m simply your guide through the darkness. My role is to show you the route, walk you through the areas, and explain why these locations are considered haunted based on local history, urban legend and personal accounts.

You’ll be given notes with the lore of each area, including stories and background context, but this is not a performance. These are haunted fitness hikes, so expect to stay moving and cover ground rather than stand in one spot listening to long narratives. The focus is on the environment and the experience itself.

The hikes are generally safe, but you’re participating at your own risk. We’ll be walking through real areas at night, and some of them may have unexpected horrors that are not supernatural. I am not responsible for anything that may happen, including encounters with unpredictable people or situations. Use common sense, stay aware of your surroundings, and be prepared for a real-world environment and exploration.

FAQs

Do I need to be in good shape for this?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but this is a fitness hike, not a casual stroll. Expect to walk at least 3 miles at a steady pace. If you’re comfortable walking for an hour or two, you’ll be fine. If you have mobility issues, then you may not be able to go all through the rugged and unpaved terrain that we may need to cross.

Is this a traditional ghost tour with storytelling?

No. This is not a theatrical or performance-based tour. You’ll get notes and short explanations about the lore and history, but I’m not here to entertain, I’m here to guide.

Are the stories real?

The stories are based on local legends, historical accounts, and reported experiences. Whether you believe them or not is up to you. I’m just providing the context behind why these places are considered haunted.

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots and dress for the weather. You may also want to bring water and a flashlight, although some areas will have limited lighting. You may get wet and we may have to cross rugged terrain in some areas.

Is it safe?

These hikes are generally safe, but they take place in real environments at night. You are responsible for your own safety and awareness. I am not responsible for any incidents, including encounters with unpredictable individuals or situations.

Can beginners join?

Yes. You don’t need any experience with ghost tours or hiking. Just be ready to walk and keep up with the group.

Are the tours family-friendly?

It depends on the group. The content isn’t overly graphic, but certain areas, atmosphere and locations may be unsettling for younger participants.

How long do the tours last?

Most tours run between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the route and pace of the group. But some can be longer.

Do tours run year-round?

Some tours are seasonal but select haunted hikes may available during different times of the year.

Where do we meet?

Meeting locations vary depending on the route, such as Clintonville, Olde Town East, The Hilltop or Westerville. Exact details will be provided on the booking and/or event page.

Which Route is Your Favorite?

The Walhalla Witch and the Gates of Hell route. Those genuinely have the most fascinating lore (in my opinion).

Hilltop Ghost Tour: The Remains of the Insane Asylum to Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery

Our journey begins near ODOT, a site many don’t realize was built atop the grounds of the old Columbus Insane Asylum. Long before the modern facility stood here, this land was home to thousands of patients, many of whom never left. Beneath the pavement and structures, the past lingers — and it is from this very ground that we begin our descent into the Hilltop’s darker history, making our way toward the Insane Cemetery and its eerie “specimen” graves.

From there, we move through the Hilltop neighborhoods toward Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, a place steeped in Civil War history and lingering spirits. Here, we uncover the legend of the Lady in White, said to wander the grounds in silent mourning. As the night deepens, we continue north to the Camp Chase Trail, where tales persist of madmen and restless souls once tied to the nearby asylum. After confronting the darkness, we make our way back to the safety of ODOT, completing a tour that blurs the line between history and the unknown.

German Village Ghost Tour: From Sausage Haus to Shadowed Streets

Our journey begins at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, where the scent of old-world cooking masks a neighborhood steeped in history. From there, we move toward the site of the former Max & Erma’s, where whispers of lingering energy and unexplained occurrences have long circulated among locals. As we walk the brick-lined streets of German Village, you’ll begin to feel how tightly the past clings to this historic district.

We continue into Schiller Park, where the shadows stretch long and the stories grow darker. Here, we explore the haunted statue and the eerie reputation of the park itself, along with the looming tower that has sparked its own share of unsettling tales. Along the way, we make a brief stop at The Book Loft, which features a maze-like world of winding rooms and hidden corners that feels almost supernatural in its own right, even if no spirits have been confirmed. As the night unfolds, German Village reveals itself as a place where history, atmosphere, and mystery quietly intertwine.
